TEXAS INDIAN BATTLES

BATTLE OF NECHES- JULY 15 AND 16, 1839

  • Lamar ordered the Cherokee to leave Texas,when they refused Lamar sent 500 soldiers and a fight broke out along the Neches River
  • By the end of the fight, 100 Cherokee were dead including Chief Bowles
  • Texas forces pushed the surviving Cherokee into North Indian Territory in the U.S.
  • Other Indian tribes including the Caddo and Shawnee were also pushed north.

THE COUNCIL HOUSE FIGHT-1840

  • 65 Comanche arrived at Council House in San Antonio for peace talks.
  • They were required to bring all captives, but they only brought a few.
  • One captive, a teenager named Matilda Lockhart told the Texans that the Comanche still had 15 captives.
  • The Texans tried to take the Comanche captive to get their people back, but the Comanche called for help and a fight broke out.
  • At the end of the fight, 35 Comanche lay dead, including 12 Chiefs and two children. Only seven Texans died.
  • This fight ruined any chance of peace with the Comanche and Texans

THE BATTLE OF PLUM CREEK-1840

  • After the Council House Fight, the Comanche were outraged. They killed their Texan captives and sent a large raiding party to the settlements of Linnville and Victoria, killing more than 20 settlers, burning houses, and stealing supplies and livestock
  • The Texans called for revenge. A force of volunteers formed and began searching for the Comanche
  • Under Edward Burleson and others, the volunteers found the Comanche on August 11, 1840 and attacked.
  • At the end of the fight, more than 130 Comanche were killed. Only one Texan was killed and seven were wounded.
