1. DESCRIPTION

  • Include details to help you picture or get to know a person, place, thing, or an idea
  • Signal words: such as, for examole, for instance, in front, beside, near

2. CAUSE AND EFFECT

  • Explain WHY something happened and WHAT happened as a result.
  • Signal words: therefore, so, as a result, because, if.....then

3. PROBLEM AND SOLUTION

  • Presents a problem and explains how it's solved
  • Signal words: propse, conclude, a solution, the problem, the reason for

4. COMPARE AND CONTRAST

  • presents the similarities and/or differences between two items, such as a pair of events, time periods, ideas, or places.
  • Signal words: like, unlike, but, in contrast, on the other hand, however, also, opposed to

5. ORDER AND SEQUENCE

  • describes events in the order in which they happen; also called chronological order.
  • Signal words: first, next, before, then, after that, finally, at the same time
