Dating & Marriage

Minors don’t usually socialize with people of the other gender until older. When you get older you obtain different companions. When two people spend a lot of time together and the male thinks that they’re ready to make a commitment, they have to the approval from the female’s entire family and from his own. Pink is the traditional bridal dress color, but some may choose to go with a white dress. When a couple gets married, a monk comes and blesses the woman before the groom comes and then when he comes family and friends bless them to a happy marriage by pouring water into their hands.

Education

Thai education is very different from our education in America. The classes are very large and range from around 20 to 40 students. Because the classes are usually large, that means the lessons are mostly lectured based, making students rely on their own memorization skills. Students are also required to wear uniforms everyday. The grade levels are split up into 3 parts: Level 1 (KG1 - KG3), Level 2 (P1 - P6), and Level 3 (M1 - M6). Students are only required to take grade levels P1 - M3, the others are optional.

Etiquette

Thai people are all about respect. Respect is especially important towards elders or people of high social class. But, if you aren't all that royal, the little things to show respect are usually greatly appreciated. For example, giving gifts isn't required, but it is appreciated when going to someone’s home. Another example is to remove shoes before entering someone’s home and wearing neat clothing. Just got a boy/girlfriend? Don’t let the world know, showing PDA in Thailand is considered inappropriate.

Religion

Religion affects everyday life, not just in Thailand, but all around the world. 95% of the population are Buddhist, but the country allows freedom of religion. Buddhism is the main religion, but there are also smaller religions that are practiced, like Christianity and Islam. There are also traditions that Buddhists have. Young males are expected to be monks for at least 3 months of their lives to study the fundamentals of Buddhism. Another tradition would be keeping away from evil during the holidays. They also do not follow what lots of people do in America, by drinking alcohol and partying all night. Instead, true Buddhists like to celebrate by getting involved in charities and helping people in pain.
