THE 13 COLONIES

THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIES

• The first settlers were English puritans
• They came seeking religious freedom
• Many villages required the towns people to attend churches and pay taxes

THE MIDDLE COLONIES

• The first settlers were Swedish and Netherlandish
• England came later and overpowered them in some states, but soon New York and New Jersey were over ran with the Dutch
• No American colonies were founded by Germans, but Germans occupied much of Pennsylvania.

THE SOUTHERN COLONIES

• The southern colonies were founded by wealthy english men
• Later colonists were Germans, scots, and Irishmen.
• Although most southern colonies were angelic, they practiced other religions
