1917

April the US Enters the War
Prior to the passing of the 18th Amendment (Passed December of 1917-and went into effect in 1920), the US entered WWI joining w/ Britain, France, & Russia -against Germany, Ottoman.

The Temperance movement had been growing in popularity and the War pushed forward a temporary ban on grains (to maintain food production, not alcohol)

Note that the possession & Consumption of alcohol was not addressed.

But, in part, due to the language of the 18th amendment the actual drinking of alcohol was not illegal, and this gave way to the Speakeasy, and ultimately the illegal manufacturing (bootlegging), illegal importation, and transportation of alcohol giving rise to organized crime.

This also paved the way to organized crime in America, i.e. Al Capone who became a crime boss of chicago on the profits of over 100 million a year. This also was a peak in crime.
