Changes after the war

  • As WW1 came to an end, the roaring twenties began
  • Many advancements took place
  • Examples: technology, tourism, and medical advancements
  • A few advancements in S.C. were suburbs and trolley systems 

Inventions

  • During the 1920s there were many new inventions
  • Such as, vacuums, washing machines, and the Model T
  • There was also sliced bread (BEST INVENTION EVER!)
  • The first stop light was invented in the late 1920s
  • Also, the hamburger, Bubble gum, and Q- tips were invented   

The harlem Renaissance

  • A cultural movement in the 1920s
  • A.A. began to use cultural expressions in urban areas
  • Effected by Great Migration
  • Langston Hughes and Louis Armstrong

Southern literacy renaissance

  • Until this time, the south was not known for literacy
  • Authors in SC were Julia Perkins, and DuBose Heyward
  • Julia Perkins earned a pultizer prize in literature
  • DuBose Heyward was an American author famous for "Porgy"

New "breed" of women

  • Flappers were a new type of woman in the 1920s
  • They wore short skirts, had short hair and makeup
  • They drank, smoke, and were unladylike
  • Most ladies in South Carolina didn't join the flappers

Right to vote

  • Women suffrage advocates finally received the rights they wanted   
  • The 19th amendment gave them the right to vote
  • It was passed on August 18th, 1920     

Tourism

  • The coastal area of SC grew greatly due to tourism
  • Hotels were opened up in Charleston
  • The National Historic movement began
  • The coast of SC grew during this time period

Entertainment

  • Black and white movies with no sound
  • Radios were manufactured
  • They had night clubs such as the big apple

prohibition

  • Was a HUGE failure
  • Crime increased and blue laws were enforced

KKK

  • Began in Tennessee as a social group of veteran confederates 
  • They burnt churches, schools, and crosses
  • Supported Democracy and despised republicans
  • A political force, many state leaders were members
  • Was weakened in the 40s and was revived during the Civil era

Overall there were much more differences than just the war ending. There were numerous technological advancements along with Renaissances, Prohibition, Women's suffrage, a new "breed" of women and entertainment.
