1. In 1861, the first ever hard pretzel bakery in the United States was established. Sturgis Pretzel House was situated in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Sturgis Pretzel House is still operating today and acts as a tourist attraction for those who wish to take a peek inside and experience firsthand the history of the pretzel. To this day, the state of Pennsylvania remains a major player in the pretzel game, producing roughly 80 percent of America’s pretzels.
2. On September 21, 2008, Manfred Keilwerth and Olaf Kluy of Germany claimed the Guinness World Record for the largest pretzel ever made. The pretzel weighed in at a whopping 842 pounds. It measures 26 feet and 10 inches in length, and 10 feet and two inches in height. The pretzel was so large that Keilwerth and Kluy had to bake it in four separate portions to be able to finish it.
3. For the first time ever, the pretzel earned its very own holiday on April 26, 2003 to acknowledge how important pretzels were to Pennsylvania’s economy and history. National Pretzel Day was declared by Ed Rendell, who at the time was the governor of Pennsylvania. If you choose to donate, the proceeds will go to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). If we reach our goal of 65,000 pretzels, we’ll make a corporate contribution to LLS.
4. In 1993, the first pretzel museum was opened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Visitors delighted in a seven-minute film that detailed the history of the state’s – and country’s – beloved snack, as well as a demonstration of modern pretzel baking techniques. Visitors were also invited to participate in a hands-on pretzel-twisting lesson. The Pretzel Museum offered a day of fun for all ages, giving some insight into this snack phenomenon.
