THE WORLD DURING MY LIFE

STEVEN STINE BLOCK 5

Bill Clinton definitely earns part of my respect with the creation of NAFTA. This respect is short lived because of the way he handled his personal life. He could've been a great president if he didn't lie to the American people.

George W. Bush could've handled 9-11 better. He was a great president who was loyal to his people. He ultimately ran the country the way he did to keep American citizens safe.

This is, in my opinion, one of the most iconic basketball pictures ever taken. Michael Jordan, with 6 NBA Championship rings to his credit, is undoubtedly the greatest basketball player in history. His legacy will always live on through his shoes, his skills, his generosity, and his basketball career.

This man is the definition of a freak of nature. His name is Hicham El-Guerrouj, and he holds the world record in the 1500m, 1 mile, and 2000m runs. This runner from Morocco has numerous world championships and a gold medal in his three trips to the Olympics from 1996 to 2004. He is one of my inspirations in running. Hicham El-Guerrouj is a hero; anyone who can run a mile in 3:43.13 is a hero to me.

Anyone who is a fan of America's greatest pastime is a fan of the shortstop Derek Jeter. His incredible career, which was spent entirely with the New York Yankees, was hall of fame-worthy to say the absolute least. Even greater than his baseball career is his love of people. Derek Jeter has earned the world's respect as one of the greatest players, and one of the greatest people, of all time.

When any American hears the phrase "9-11", his or her heart drops in remembrance of what happened on September 11, 2001. The attack which terrorists crashed planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania remains the deadliest attack to occur on American soil. Our country is still involved in a war trying to eradicate terrorism to prevent future disasters. This day has totally changed the way we live our everyday lives in the United States.

NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) actually affects my life more than I would have ever thought. This agreement between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico increased exports, jobs, and money made in Michigan. It has positively impacted Americans' lives ever since Clinton implemented it in 1993.

As the United States' first African American president, Barack Obama was inaugurated in 2009. I specifically remember history class in elementary school on January 20th. It was the first inauguration that I saw and the first one that I will remember.

I still remember exactly where I was exactly when I heard about the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Getting home from school myself and hearing about this was difficult to swallow in itself. The pain of the parents of the twenty students that were killed is unfathomable. Even after Columbine near the turn of the century, schools across the nation were forced to keep increasing security to keep teachers and students safe.

When I found out that Seal Team Six had killed Osama Bin Laden, I felt a huge rush of pride for being an American. Ten years of searching for the man who put our country in fear had finally come to an end. This took an enormous weight off of the country's shoulders; we finally got justice for the victims of 9-11.

The Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing did not happen in my lifetime. It happened in 1995. It was one of the first domestic terrorist attacks that frightened Americans and caused increases in security.

My favorite pastime of the school year has to be watching SportsCenter every morning. It fuels my love for sports every day, is always interesting, and always fills me in on what I may have missed the night before. Whether it's just an update of the day before, an analysis of oncoming games, or a segment that can change a person's outlook on sports and life, SportsCenter never fails to impress.

I own so many Nike Elite products that it is hard to believe! Between basketball shorts, basketball socks, soccer socks, jackets, hats, shirts, and many other products, Nike's Elite brand grosses one billion dollars in socks alone. This brand has helped countless people, including myself, feel comfortable and perform better in athletics.

Where would the world be without the World Wide Web? Connecting the world through websites of business, news, recreation, and seemingly endless more uses since 1991, the World Wide Web has left a tremendous impact on lives everywhere. Who knows where we would be in society without it?

The ISS, or International Space Station, is the most impressive human enterprise run outside of our world. First launched in 1998, this satellite serves as a research center for many fields of science. Since science is interesting me, so is learning about this mid-space lab.
