PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ABU SIMBEL

A PRESENTATION BY DEANNA.

The Abu Simbel Temples are two temples that were built by Ramses II. They are called The Great Temple (which was his) and the one which belonged to his favourite wife which was The Small Temple. They are named Abu Simbel not after the explorer who discovered amd searched them, but the boy who led the explorer to where they were buried.

This is where the temples are on a map of Egypt.

The Features Of Abu Simbel

  • They were made by Pharoh Ramses II in 1257 BCE.
  • Ramses II built  statues of the royal family (of Egypt).
  • There are many statues and wall drawings of Egyptian gods.

Abu Simbel is very special because it is a piece of Ancient Egypt left for us to see. It is also perfectly arranged so that twice every year, on the 22nd of Feburary and October the sunlight beautifully illuminates the back wall and the thrones of the four gods seated there.

The Abu Simbel Temples were created, at least in part, to celebrate Ramesses' victory over the Hittites at the Battle of Kadesh.

The Abu Simbel temples were made by many slaves. The two temples and the statues in them were carved out of solid rock. This took approximately 20 years.
