Aeneas tells about how the city of Troy was taken over by the men in the wooden horse. He tells of how he had to carry his father on his shoulders in order for them to be able to escape the city. Creusa, Aeneas' wife gets lost along the way to a safe land.
Aeneas continues to Delos and asks the oracle about the gods. He settles in Crete. A dream gives him the true sense of the oracle. He takes the advice and goes away to Italy. Along the shores he comes in contact with some challenging adventures. His father died in Sicily.
Dido tells her sister about how she loves Aeneas. Juno raises a storm that makes Aeneas and Dido end up in the same cave. Mercury came to Aeneas and told him he needed to leave Carthage. He secretly plans out his departing. When Dido finds out, she wants to put a stop to, but cannot. She ends up killing herself.
Aeneas is driven by a storm on the coasts of Sicily where he is met by his friend Acestes. He has a memorial for his father. Juno sends Iris to persuade the Trojan ladies to burn the ships. They burnt four, and would have consumed the rest, had not Jupiter, by a miraculous shower, extinguished the fire. Aeneas builds a city for those who were unfit for war or those who were weary.
The war had begun. Aeneas goes in person to ask Evander and the Etruscans for help. Evander kindly helps him by giving him men and his son Pallas. Vulcan made armor for Aeneas.
Turnus took advantage of Aeneas' absence while he was gone to get help. Turnus fires down some of Aeneas' ships and attacks his camp. The Trojans send Nisus and Euryalus to recall Aeneas.
