*Healthy aging - Development and maintenance of optimal physical, mental and social well-being and overall functional health among older adults

*Ageism - Discrimination against those who are in the later period of adulthood
-Based on negative assumptions about the
expected biological slowdowns that occur
naturally with advancing age
-Though this term can be used against younger
people

*Health promotion - Any planned combination of educational, political, environmental, regulatory or organizational mechanisms that support the actions and conditions of living conducive to the health of individuals and communities

*Successful aging - Superior quality of life. Older adults should be able to engage in their lives through the maintenance of physical strength, cognitive functions and positive relationships

*Health literacy - Ability to read, understand and use health information to make appropriate healthcare decisions and follow instructions for treatment that allow patients to manage their health and improve quality of life
