PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Airplane

By Jake Herrmann

Beginning

  • The thing that started the idea of a 'plane' was the U.S in 1903
  • The U.S thought they would not be able to create a flying plane until 1-10 million years later
  • The first plane however was created only 8 days later
The USA were trying to invent a machine that could fly though the air powed by a motor. They eventually decided that it would be an impossible task and could only be completed 1-10 million years later, that would mean they thought planes would be created in the year 1,001,903 - 10,001,903.

The U.S decided to put an ad in the news paper for whoever could invent a flying machine powered by an engine and would receive a reward by doing so.

Who were the Wright Brothers?

  • Orville Wright 1871-1948
  • Wilbur Wright 1867-1912
Orville Wright was the younger of the two brothers and Wilbur was the older one.

They grew up together in america and we 2 of 7 children. Their mother was Milton Wright.

There tinkering began when their dad went over seas and brought back a toy helicopter of french design. The Wright Brothers played with this helicopter until it broke, this is when they decided to fix it and made one of their own.

How the first plane was made

  • It was created by the Wright Brothers in 1903
  • It would not be possible if they had not invented the steam powered engine
  • It was made in America
The plane was made by the wright brothers in 1903. It started by them seeing an add in the newspaper from the government saying they could not invent the first flying motorised plane and would give a reward to anyone who could come up with one.

The wright brothers got to work straight away on this and invented it in only 8 days later.

They tried their design and it flew through the air for about 12 seconds.

Benefits of the plane

  • Faster travel time to get places fast
  • Could spy on other neighbouring countries
The benefits of the plane:

1) The first plane could travel distances quick
but could not travel far

2) In world wars they could spy on other countries to see what they were up to

3) In the future could make traveling to other countries fast and efficient

The main use however at the time was to serve in the army as an airborne troup

Problems

  • People could easily attack other places around the world
  • Took a while to perfect the design with a lot of casualties getting there
The main problems of the first airplane was that it was very hard to control.

Another problem was getting it off the ground as it was a very slow take off and only went around 40km/h

Evidence of the invention today

  • Used for air travel
  • Used for military use
The plane today has come a long way, from simple steam engine to loud jet engines. The modern day plane is everywhere, just go to a capital city and you will see them flying in and out.

They are also still used in the army, fighter jets have emerged and so have spy planes such as the Black bird.
