THE RISE OF (YOUNG) WOMEN

  • A 2013 Pew Research Center study shows that 40% of households with kids have breadwinner moms.
  • These breadwinner moms provide all or most of the family income -- way up from 11% in 1960.
  • Women are almost half the workforce, and 37% of married mothers have a higher income than their husbands.
  • The change for women is even more striking for young, unmarried women in cities.
  • In 147 out of 150 of America's biggest cities, median full time salaries are 8% higher than their peers.

THE RISE OF (YOUNG) WOMEN

  • Since the mid-90's, single women have purchased homes at nearly 2x the rate of single men.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statics found that since 2010, women are more than half of highly paid managers.
  • The trend will only continue because women are getting the skills to compete in our economy.
  • Women earn: 60% of bachelors, 60% of masters, 50% of MDs and JDs, 42% of MBAs.

GENDER ROLES ARE CHANGING

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • What are traditional gender roles?
  • How do Katniss and Peeta conform to these roles?
  • How do they defy these traditional roles?
  • How/When does the novel deal with this theme?
