Facts About The Amazonian Manatee

  • Sometimes called a sea cow
  • Graceful swimmers in coastal waters
  • Powers themselves with their strong tails, they typically glide along at 5 miles and hour, but they can swim at 15 miles an hour in short bursts
  • Live in freshwater
  • Never leave the water but like most marine mammals, they must breathe air at the surface

The amazonian manatee us able to consume up to eight percent of their own body weight in one day eating.

Temperature: The amazonian manatee needs to be in 60 degrees because they cannot be in cold waters.

More Facts About Amazonian Manatees

  • they can live up to 60 years of age on their own in the wild
  • There are 3 other different kinds of manatees, of course the amazonian manatee, west Indian manatee, and the African manatee
  • They have a scientific name to, the Trichus inunguis
  • They can grow up to 2.8 meters in length and weigh half a ton
