HOW THE WEST WAS WON

  • In 1769 Daniel Boone started to explore the unsettled Kentucky
  • They passed through great forests and huge mountains that were hard to cross
  • There was fighting between the settlers and the Native Americans who lived on the land
  • The frontier was a dangerous and difficult place but it was also full of opportunity

DANIEL BOONE

  • Daniel Boone led settlers through the Cumberland Gap and along the Wilderness Road into Kentucky
  • Settlers chose the Bluegrass Region because of its rich soil
  • Fort Harrod was the first permanent settlement in Kentucky

  • Mountains might limit human activities
  • They are difficult to cross
  • In early American history rivers promoted human activities
  • They could be used for transportation

  • In early American history there was conflict with the Native Americans
  • They fought over control of the land and natural resources

LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

  • The frontier was a dangerous and difficult place
  • The first thing pioneers had to do was to clear the land
  • Settlers had to be self-sufficient in order to survive
  • The American frontier was full of opportunity
