RISING CONCERNS

  • British parliament passed the stamp act, the first direct taxation of colonists
  • England had to earn funds to support territories they gained from war with france
  • England "supposedly" used a majority of the tax money for defending america

SIGNIFICANT TAXES IMPOSED ON COLONISTS

  • 1765- Stamp Act
  • 1767- Townshend Acts
  • 1773- Tea Act

Patriotic propaganda
Due to rising hatred of Britain and not being represented in parliament, riots began breaking out in the colonies, and British soldiers were posted to keep control of them. However, colonists began assaulting the soldiers with stones, snowballs and other debris. After one soldier was clubbed and fell, all the soldier began firing into the harassing crowd. Patriotic colonists used this as propaganda, conveniently
Removing the colonists fault.

More American antics...
In June of 1772, an incident occurred in which patriot burned a British warship that was strictly enforcing trade regulations, and later that same year, they commenced with the Boston Tea Party, in which several colonists destroyed £630000 in tea in one night. This prompted Britain to create some of the worst acts yet.

HOSTILITIES BEGAN

  • April 1775- Battles of Lexington and Concord
  • Battle of Bunker Hill- june 1775
  • Winter 1775- American invasion of canada
  • March of 1776- British soldiers evacuate Boston
  • October 1777- Battle of Saratoga

In 1783 all hostilities ceased due to the signing of the treaty of Paris. This gave the United States all the land below the Great Lakes and to the east of the Mississippi River. This resulted in the shaping of our modern United States
