PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE SOUTH

  • Tariffs enabled the northerners to purchase more goods from the South
  • Could transport their products more easily due to geographical location
  • Was made up of mostly planantions
  • Slavery was predominant
  • Ability to ship their cotton to different countries

THE NORTH

  • Manufacturing flourished
  • Filled with many cities
  • Transportation was far more accessible
  • Republication motherhood was common
  • More economic opportunities available for women and immigrants

THE WEST

  • Considered the bread basket of America
  • The Erie Canal provided direct acesss to the North
  • Made up of mostly small farmers
  • Populated by many Germans and former northerners
  • Transportation allowed western products to be shipped to more places

THE SOUTH BENEFITTED THE LEAST

  • All of the protective tariffs halted foreign shipment
  • Could only ship to their other parts of America( limited trade)
  • Opposed paying for roads and canals
  • Forced to buy northern Ameican made goods

THE NORTH BENEFITTED THE MOST

  • American system promoted transportation which helped the industry
  • The Erie Canal (and others) made distribution of products easy
  • Created economic and cultural diversity
  • Tariffs ensured that northern goods would be purchased
