THE "APACHE " SUNRISE CEREMONY
HOW DOES THIS CEREMONY TAKE PLACE
The Apache sunrise ceremony is a very spiritual and important event for the Apache when a girl hits puberty. The ceremony will take place soon after the girl has had her first menstruation.
The tribe will preform a ceremony that will go for 4 day's, the ceremony will include a number of sacred ceremonies, dances, songs, and enactments. The girls become imbued with the physical and spiritual power of the "White woman", and embrace their role as women of the Apache nation.
After all the preparation, the medicine man will lead the girl through the many stages of the ritual. This ritual includes the girl running East towards dawn, and the four directions ( the four stages of life)
WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE CEREMONY
This ceremony involves extensive teaching and preparation. Often lasting six months or more before the rituals will begin. Most of the preparation is getting the girls highly symbolic costume and the building of the lodge.
The way things are prepared must be done in a certain way. The family is also highly involved in the ceremony, preparing food and gifts for the participants and visitors.
