PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Apache Indians are believed to have came to Texas sometime around 1528. Very Few Apaches were in Texas by 1940.
Both the Lipan and Mescalero Apaches lived in the Plains cultural group.
Apaches lived in Wikiups, or wigwaums, which was a more permanent home. They also lived in teepees, a more temporary home that could be moved easily when the tribe was hunting buffalo.
Apaches ate corn, also called maize, and meat from buffalo. They gathered berries and acorns. A traditional food of theirs was roasted agave, a plant that is known to weigh 100 pounds!
The Apache clothing was made of leather from buckskin. The women wore buckskin dresses, while the men wore shirts and breech clothes.They would decorate their clothing with fringes, beads, feathers, and shells. They wore leather shoes called moccasins.
The Lipan Apaches were farmers, but most Apaches only gathered and hunted their food.
Activities:
Storytelling, beadwork, basket weaving, making jewelry, and riding horses. Complete chores, cook, and other everyday activities.
Religion:
Apaches we're very religious and had many ceremonies centered around spiritual singing and dancing. They believed that supernatural beings were everywhere.
Environment:
They lived in an arid and dry environment. They lived in deserts.
Values:
They had no government or laws so they passed down a code of conduct from one generation to the next. They focused their lives around family.
The Apache used to live in Canada before they migrated to Texas.
The Apache men cut their hair very short on the left side but allowed the hair on the right to hang long.
Since the Apache started using horses to hunt their food with, they became nomadic hunter gatherers.
