My Question...What will happen if Asian Carp make it into the Great Lakes?

What is an Invasive Species?

An invasive species is defined as an organism (plant, animal, fungus, or bacterium) that is not native and has negative effects on our economy, our environment, or our health. Invasive plants and animals are the second greatest threat to biodiversity after habitat loss.

So much of the habitat destruction and pollution is based on the simple principle that we somehow have been given free license over other species to degrade the planet.

What Are Asian Carp?
Asian carp are a group of highly invasive fish species capable of causing economic, ecological and human health harm. They include the flowing species:

bighead carp
black carp
grass carp
silver carp
large-scale silver carp

How did Asian carp get here?

Bighead and silver carp were imported into the southeastern United States in the 1970s to remove algae and suspended matter out of catfish farm ponds and wastewater treatment ponds.

Why are Asian Carp a Problem?

  • Large Size
  • Voracious Appitites
  • Detrimental affects on the 7 Billion dollar fishing industry
  • Can spawn multiple times annually, quickly displacing native species
  • Can jump out of the water, creating a safety hazard

What's being done to stop Asian carp?

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has built a pair of electrical barriers in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, a man-made canal that connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River via the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers.

How is Michigan Involved?
The Michigan Attorney General's office has been studying potential legal procedures to close the locks on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal to prevent further migration of fish.

My Inquiry Reflection

  • Changed question multiple times
  • Easy to find quality sources
  • Sharing findings with my peers
  • Generating more questions....

More Questions

  • How do Zebra Mussels affect the fishing industry?
  • Are there any invasive plants that can harm agriculture?
  • What current legislation is being done for the Asian Carp problem?
