THE ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR

BEGINNING OF WORLD WAR II

  • began when Poland was invaded by German troops in Sep. 1939
  • 61 countries were involved in the war
  • cost was over one trillion dollars, 1939-1945
  • 55 million people died
  • attack on Pearl Harbor was 2 years after the war began

POWERS IN THE WAR

  • Allied Powers:
  • mainly U.S., Britain, France, and the Union of Soviet Socialists Republics
  • Axis Powers:
  • mainly Germany, Italy, and Japan

SURPRISE ATTACK

  • Japanese Navy surprise attacked U.S. naval base (Hawaii) on Dec. 7, 1941
  • attempt to expand into the Far East
  • over 2,000 Americans killed & all US Navy ships damaged
  • declarations of war- U.S./Japan, Germany & Italy/U.S.
  • main factor that brought US into WW2

U.S. INFLUENCE & INVOLVEMENT

  • up until Pearl Harbor the U.S. had not been actively involved in WW2
  • American influence in the war was heavy
  • sent over 50 billion dollars of war material to Allied Powers

United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that the attack on Pearl Harbor would forever be "a date which will live in infamy". December 7th is National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
