BATTLE OF COLD HARBOR

MAY 31- JUNE 12, 1864

This war took place in Hanover County. The Confederate leader was Robert E. Lee. The Union leaders were Ulysses S. Grant, and George G. Meade.

What led up to the war

  • Grant was trying to destroy Lee's army.
  • They were battling to take crossroads.
  • Grant attacked Lee's army and that turned in the battle.

Details about the battle

  • Grant used the same strategy in war as Abraham Lincoln. That was to go after the army not the capital.
  • Lee's army was outnumbered 60,000- 100,000.
  • Lee anticipated Grant's attack.

Outcome of the battle

  • In the Union.... 1,844 were killed; 9,077 were wounded; and 1,816 were missing/ captured.
  • In the Confederacy... 788 were killed; 3,376 were wounded; and 1,123 were missing/ captured.

The significance

  • The most significant battle was on June 3.
  • It was one of the last battles Grant led.
  • It was one of America's bloodiest battles, and thousands were killed.
