Background Information

  • The North and South disagreed on slavery.
  • The North wanted to take out slavery in the whole US.
  • South wanted to continue slavery.
  • North (Union)  and South (Confederates) started fighting
  • in 1860, there were almost 4 million slaves, Slavery caused civil war.

Importance of Gettysburg battle

  • North won many battles and South was loosing hope.
  • Gettysburg war was one of the major wins for North
  • That gave North hope to keep fighting.
  • Abraham Lincoln was reelected because of Gettysburg win.
  • South lost one third of its army in Gertysburg.

More Facts

  • North had 94,000 soldiers to start with.
  • South had about 72,000 soldiers to start with.
  • Union side ( North) lost 23,000 soldiers
  • Confederates ( South ) lost 28,000 soldiers.
  • Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles.
