Why battle the Athenians?

The Persians were eager to expand their empire

When and Where?

The location of the battle was in Marathon which is close to Athens and it occurred in the fall of 490 B.C.

Athens Outnumbered

The Persians had an army of nearly 100,000 soldiers and the Athenians had only 10,000 soldiers.

No Help?

The Athenians needed help so they asked Phidippides to run and ask Sparta to help but the Spartans said no.

Who Won?

Amazingly, Athens won the battle after killing 6,200 Persian soldiers and capturing many, Darius surrendered.
