WHY WAS THE BATTLE FOUGHT?
The battle was forgot because the French had lost many men in the city of Verdun.
This had been going on for several months and the French needed some relief.
They started planning an attack on the Germans from the North of Verdun.
This then required the Germans to move their men away from the Battlefield of Verdun.

OUTCOMES
The Somme is known to be one of the worst battles on the western front.
Many deaths and injures came out of the Somme battle
This was because technology was incorporated into war for the first time.
The men were not prepared for this, causing thousands of deaths.
465,000 men died and 623,907 men were injured, > 1,000,000 men in 4 months!
