The behavior of gases

without gases we couldn't live

THe three states of matter

  • Almost all things can exist as only one
  • Either a solid, liquid, or gases
  • H2O  or water is an example that can be all 3
  • H2O can be frozen into a solid
  • Boiled into a gases steam and through condensation turned into a liquid

Kinetic Molar theory

  • According to this all matter is made of tiny particles
  • That are in constant, random, stright-line motion
  • The motion is always interupted by the collison of particales
  • The speed of the motion is dependent on the temperatuer

CHARACTERISTICS of gases

  • The volume of gases is nearly all empty space
  • Particles are able to move freely
  • They are easily compressible because of the empty space
  • This allows particles to be pushed together
  • Gases are both expandable and compressible

Converting Between Pressures
1 atm=760 mm Hg=101.3 kPa

Converting between pressures ex.

  • Convert 1104 torr to atm
  • 1104 torr * 1 atm/760=
  • 114/760=
  • 1.45263....
  • 1.453 (rounded)

gas law Formulas

  • P1V1=P2V2 Boyle's law
  • V1/T1=V2/T2 Charles' law
  • P1/T1=P2/T2 Gay-Lussac's Law
  • P1*V1/T1=P2*V2/T2 Combined gas law
  • PV=nRT Ideal gas law
