PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE BERLIN WALL

BY: CONNOR ATKINS

THE WALL

  • The point of the wall was to separate East and West Germany
  • Many people in East Germany migrated to West Germany due to a mix of political, economic, and personal reasons
  • It lasted from August 13, 1961 to Nov. 9, 1989
  • The wall is actually two separate walls

CONSTRUCTION OF THE WALL

  • Construction started shortly after WWII ended
  • They started with barbed wire lining the border, so it became increasingly harder to cross over
  • However, the sector borders of West Berlin were still open, so many people went through there

EXPANSION AND DESTRUCTION

  • Even after the wall was built, people were still migrating to the west
  • The wall made it so that family and friends were separated
  • In 1975, the East German leadership gave people the right to freely cross between Germanies
  • The demolition began when the border opened

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

  • The Berlin Wall is important because it separated East and West Germany. The fall of the Berlin Wall meant 1 country, which split into 2, now forming back into 1.
