The Bichon Frise
By: Claire Kaslon
The Bichon Frise, is a cheerful, small dog breed with a love of mischief and a lot of love to give. The Bichon Frise originated from Spain and Belgium, and then to France.
Bichons were initially divided into 4 categories: The Bichon Malteise, the Bichon Bolognaise, the Bichon Havanese and the Bichon Tenerife - these names reflected their regions of origin.
Size:
*The weight of Bichon Frise range from 7 - 12 pounds
*The height ranges from 9.5 - 11.5 inches, up to the shoulder.
They live up to 12-15 years
The skull is slightly rounded and the muzzle is not pointy. The tail is groomed to be long and curly and is carried over the back. It has a black nose and dark round eyes; its white hair consists of a curly, dense coat with little shedding. A small amount of buff, cream, or apricot color may be seen around its ears, snout, paws or body. Their fluffiness often gets them confused for stuffed animals.
Bichon-friendly choices include poultry, fish, lamb, venison and others. Skin issues and allergies are common in bichons, so offering omega-3-rich fish, like wild salmon, can help improve skin condition and fight the inflammation associated with allergies and skin problems. Alongside meat, bichons can enjoy fresh produce.
Bred specifically to be a companion, the Bichon Frise is a wonderfully affectionate dog. Because his job was to entertain, his nifty tricks made him an ideal circus dog. Today, though, he’s more often found entertaining his people at home.
The Bichon is pregnant for a little over two months. It is not unusual for Bichon's to have an hour rest between each puppy, or to even have the rest of the litter 24 hours after the most recent one. When this happens it is best to contact the vet to make sure all puppies are born. Bichon's can have as little as one pup or an average of four or five pups.
Their baby coat can be curly, straight or wavy. This does not mean that they will have the same hair when they are fully grown. No one can guess what your baby will look like. The look of the parents will help to determine that, but no one can guess how many generations back your babies look will come from. Some straight haired babies develop a lot of curl and some curly babies get straighter hair as adults. Each puppy is different.
They can be very difficult to house train and kennel train.
They are almost always mistaken for a stuffed animal. Although they love to cuddle, when threatened they will snap.
Their enemies are much like other dogs. Coyotes, skunks, raccoons, possums, cats, squirrels, and sometimes birds.
Our Bichon is nine years old. We got her when I was only three. Her name is Angel, and she is extremely protective. One time we had to take her to the vet because she got in a bad fight with a coyote.
