HOW THIS BOOK RELATES TO HATCHET

  • Death (pilot and the Jews)
Like Hatchet, this book also involves a young boy. However, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a story about a German boy, who befriends a young Jewish boy during a time when such a friendship was forbidden. There was also death in this book, like in Hatchet

RISING ACTION

  • Bruno defies his mother and goes
  • to the fence at the camp. There he finds
  • Jewish boy around his age.
Bruno did not understand what the camp was and he wasn't allowed to question anything around him at the new house. Bruno, being nine, was very curious and wanted to explore the world around him. He finds a boy named Shmuel. While questioning Shmuel he found out that everything around him wasn't as it seemed.

CLIMAX

  • Bruno gets a shovel and digs under the fence so that he
  • can help Shmuel find his father.
Shmuel tells Bruno that his father has disappeared. His father is most likely dead but both boys, being nine, did not know that and so they went and searched anyway.

FALLING ACTION

  • The Jews, including Bruno and Shmuel,
  • were forced to march, as Shmuel and the
  • other prisoners had done many times before,
  • but this time was different; They were marched
  • into an air tight room.
Bruno had put on striped pajamas to blend in while helping Shmuel look for his father. As a result, he was mistaken for a Jewish prisoner and sent to the gas chamber too.

RESOLUTION

  • Although both boys died they
  • died together and the war did not
  • ruin their friendship.
The boys were both sent to a gas chamber. They were both confused and so they held hands while they were being killed.
