Canterbury
Tales

Chaucer uses the pilgrimage to "frame" his story about a group of travelers.

They gather at the Tabard Inn near London for the 70 mile trip to Canterbury

Harry Bailey, the innkeeper/host suggests they tell stories to pass the time.

The travelers plan to tell 2 stories there and 2 back and the one who tells the
best story will win dinner.

  • Stories of saint's lives
  • Sermons
  • Allegories (symbolic stories in which characters abstract ideas)
