HISTORY

  • Spain controled Cuba until the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish American war in 1898.
  • The United States military occupied the island until Cuba became an independent country in 1902.
  • However U.S. influence continued until 1959.

GOVERNMENT

  • Grenda is a constitutional monarchy- the recognized head of state is queen Elizabeth of Great Britain.
  • Grenda was once a British colony and became independent in 1974.
  • The queen is represented by a Governor General.
  • The Commonwealth of Dominica was the last Caribbean island to be colonized by Europeans.

PEOPLE

  • The influences of the Caribbean Islands are Indian, African, and european.
  • People on the islands speak many languages like Spanish, French, and English.
  • Most people ther live in urban ares where they hope to find jobs in tourist industry.

  • Their musicis calypso, and Reggae.
  • They celebrate festivals such as carnivals.

ECONOMY

  • Today in the Caribbean economy is a one crop economy.
  • Caribbean is focused mostly on the sugar cane industry.
  • In 1800's sugar industry in the Caribbean islands was in trouble.
  • The Caribbean nations had to diversity their economies.
  • They began to raise other crops such as, bananas, pineapples, and citrus fruits.
