HISTORY
- Spain controled Cuba until the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish American war in 1898.
- The United States military occupied the island until Cuba became an independent country in 1902.
- However U.S. influence continued until 1959.

GOVERNMENT
- Grenda is a constitutional monarchy- the recognized head of state is queen Elizabeth of Great Britain.
- Grenda was once a British colony and became independent in 1974.
- The queen is represented by a Governor General.
- The Commonwealth of Dominica was the last Caribbean island to be colonized by Europeans.

- The influences of the Caribbean Islands are Indian, African, and european.
- People on the islands speak many languages like Spanish, French, and English.
- Most people ther live in urban ares where they hope to find jobs in tourist industry.

- Today in the Caribbean economy is a one crop economy.
- Caribbean is focused mostly on the sugar cane industry.
- In 1800's sugar industry in the Caribbean islands was in trouble.
- The Caribbean nations had to diversity their economies.
- They began to raise other crops such as, bananas, pineapples, and citrus fruits.
