Spain controled Cuba until the United States defeated Spain in the Spanish American war in 1898.
The United States military occupied the island until Cuba became an independent country in 1902.
However U.S. influence continued until 1959.

Grenda is a constitutional monarchy- the recognized head of state is queen Elizabeth of Great Britain.
Grenda was once a British colony and became independent in 1974.
The queen is represented by a Governor General.
The Commonwealth of Dominica was the last Caribbean island to be colonized by Europeans.

The influences of the Caribbean Islands are Indian, African, and european.
People on the islands speak many languages like Spanish, French, and English.
Most people ther live in urban ares where they hope to find jobs in tourist industry.

Today in the Caribbean economy is a one crop economy.
Caribbean is focused mostly on the sugar cane industry.
In 1800's sugar industry in the Caribbean islands was in trouble.
The Caribbean nations had to diversity their economies.
They began to raise other crops such as, bananas, pineapples, and citrus fruits.
