THE CAROLINA SHAG

A PRESENTATION BY BEN AND SETH

The Carolina shag was created in the 1930's during the time when the Jim Crow laws were at large. These laws prevented whites and blacks from integrating.

Two teens, Billy Jeffers and "Chicken" Hicks, attended an African American nightclub and studied their dances. They made the Carolina shag based on a mix between black and white dance moves.

Billy and "Chicken" convinced radio stations in Myrtle Beach, SC to play R&B. This allowed the two high-tempo music to dance to.

Those who were the first to attempt the new dance were called jitterbugs. They were called this due to the quickness of the dance.

Most "jitterbugs" danced the Shag on the beach. Due to this, the Carolina Shag soon became known as "beach dancing."

In the 1960's, couples dancing, including the Shag, grew less and less popular. This was partially due to the fact that rock and roll had replaced R&B as the popular music of that day.

Today, the Carolina Shag carries moves from both the West Coast Swing and the East Coast Swing. Footwork is the key component to the dance.

During a performance of the Carolina Shag, the leader executes a series of fancy footwork, while the follower mirrors a portion of these moves.

The Carolina Shag is done primarily in the Southern States such as Florida, the Carolina's, Virginia, Georgia, etc. It is popular since it feels very smooth, and the two partners seem to connect over the dance and the music.

It was influenced by the Charleston and the Collegiate shag.
The Carolina shag influenced the Jitterbug.

The Carolina Shag is similar to the Collegiate shag.
They share similar moves.

They are both danced in close positions.
The single, double and treble shag step are involved in both.

They also have similarities to the Foxtrot and the Waltz.
It also shares the same high energy footwork as the Charleston.

In both dances, the lead places his right hand on the follow’s back. Then, the follow places her left hand on the lead’s right shoulder.

The remaining free hands grasp palm-to-palm. The partners then raise their hands to at or above shoulder level.
