The Eckstein's family had a close relationship with Freud

When Emma Eckstein turned 27

she consulted in Freud for help

She needed treatments for

  • Stomach pain 
  • Menstrual depression
  • Excessive masturbation

Emma was diagnosed hysteria as masturbation was considered harmful to mental health

A surgery took place to pinpoint the part

  of the brain which was causing the hysteria/ depression

The surgery ended terribly and Emma suffered infections and excessive bleeding

Emma Eicksten was left permanently

disfigured.
