THE CATHOLIC MONARCHS

  • The marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella made up the catholic monarchs
  • Both had difficulties in getting to the throne
  • Both had numerous enemies, leading to some political chaos

THEIR REIGN

  • King Ferdinand became King of Aragon in 1479
  • Queen Isabella became Queen of Castile in 1474
  • Married on October 14, 1469
  • Their reign spanned from 1474-1504

HOLY BROTHERHOOD

  • The king and queen were unable to maintain peace
  • It was initially supposed to be temporary but remained for a long time
  • Notorious for brutality
  • Continued to serve until 1835

EXPLORATION

  • The Monarchs authorized the trip of Chris Columbus in 1492
  • Established many colonies in the new america
  • Led to much wealth for Spain from discoveries in new world

ARCHITECTURE

THE CATHOLIC MONARCHS HAD VERY ADVANCED CHURCES AND BUILDINGS

EXPULSION

  • The monarchs ordered the expulsion of people in Spain
  • The jews and muslims were forced to leave in they did not convert to catholic
  • Every citizen of Spain at this time was christian, although many converted

SPORTS

SOCCER WAS PLAYED DURING THE TIME OF THE MONARCHS

INFLUENCE ON SPAIN

  • Ferdinand and Isabella laid the foundations of Spain's golden age
  • Spains golden age or Siglo de Oro, was a period when it became the largest
  • Empire the world had seen to that point
  • They captured Granada together, after a long war
  • Converted Spain to a 100% Christian country

THE DEATH OF THE CATHOLIC MONARCHS

  • Queen Isabella died in 1504
  • King Ferdinand then remarried in 1505
  • He eventually died in 1516
