"Two ghettos were created" (Wiesel, 11)

I chose this because the place that Elie lives in, Sighet, was changed and the way the people in Sighet were treated changed too. They were forces to live in 2 ghettos but luckily Elie got to stay with his family but they also had to wear the Yellow Star of David and they were treated like animals not humans. I chose a picture of the Nuremberg Laws because it was part of the Nuremberg Laws that changed the Jews and it also impacted the life style of the Jews and that also changed.

p. 3-22

"We had arrived. In Birkenau." (Wiesel, 28)

I chose this because after being put in the cattle carts, the went to Auschwitz and then they went to Birkenau and once they arrived, everything would change for them. I chose the the picture of Auschwitz because they arrived into Auschwitz and into Birkenau.

p. 23-28

"Hey kid how old are you?"

"Fifteen"

"No, you're eighteen."
(Wiesel, 30)

A prisoner came up to Elie and his father and told them to lie about their age because the older and younger they were, they would have been sent to the crematorium. I chose "Life Saving Lifes" because they would've been burned alive and eventually died. I chose this picture because it shows somebody saving a leaf just like Elie and his father were saved.

p. 29-46

"We were to wait there until we could be incorporated into work Kommandos." (Wiesel, 47)


The Jews would start to do work and Elie would be assigned to work with electrical parts. A Kommando is a work group in the camp and they are assigned randomly on what they get. Elie got to be with his dad which makes him lucky because not everybody got to be with family. They are assigned a block after the Kommando. I chose this picture because it shows a man doing physical labor just like the Jews did in the camp.

p. 47-65

"The doctor had to operate and there could be no discussion." (Wiesel, 78)


When winter started, it was harsher in the camp. The conditions got worse and it was hard to work. Elie's foot started to hurt and he had to go to the infirmary. When he got there, the doctor said that the foot was full of puss and if they didn't amputate fast, he could loose his whole foot. Elie agreed to continue with the operation. I chose this picture because it shows a doctor doing surgery on somebody's leg but for Elie it was his foot.

p. 66-84

"Faster, you filthy dogs!" (SS, 85)

The SS and the Jews had a death march to Gleiwitz that was probably the worst one they have ever had because it was during winter and Elie just got out of the infirmary. After Elie left, he figured out that the people still in the infirmary got liberated by Russians. Elie had a chance to be free but again did not listen. I chose a picture of a cemetery because lots of people died on the way to Gleiwitz either by being shot by the SS or falling and getting trampled over.

p. 85-97

"Dozen of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs." (Wiesel, 100)

The SS thought it was funny to make the Jews fight over food. The Jews would end up killing each other over it but only for survival. They didn't care about each other. They all became selfish. They didn't have a choice to but if it meant to live...then it would have come down to it. I chose a picture of bread because the SS threw bread crumbs at the Jews and they're the ones who made them fight.

p. 98-103

"And deep inside me, if I could have searched the recesses of my feeble conscience, I might have found something like: Free at last!..." (Wiesel, 112)

Elie's father had passes away because his lungs were becoming really bad for him to be able to breathe and they were filling up with water. Elie was taking care of his dad but he was losing hope. His dad didn't want Elie to worry because he knew it was his time to go. I chose this picture because it has a flag that represents freedom and Elie felt free after his dad died.

p. 104-112

"Our first act as free men was to throw ourselves onto the provisions." (Wiesel, 115)

After they were all liberated, Elie felt like he had breathing space of his own and he could do whatever he wanted to do. I chose this picture because it shows a new day. Elie had a new life now and he could start over. It was the first time he felt free in a long time.
