THE CHINESE REVOLUTION

OF 1949.

1921

THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY WAS FOUNDED IN SHANGHAI.

1926-1927

THE CHINESE COMMUNISTS JOINED THE NATIONALIST ARMY.

1927

THE "WHITE TERROR."
When the Nationalists turned on the Communists, purging them from their party.

1931

THE JAPENESE INVADE MANCHURIA.

1937

CHIANG KAI-SHEK WAS KIDNAPPED BY SEVERAL COMMUNIST GENERALS.
Chiang Kai-shek was the Nationalist leader.

1945

THE LEADERS OF THE TWO PARTIES MET FOR A SERIES OF TALKS.
Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong met for a series of talks to discuss the formation of a post-war government. They both agreed on a democracy.

1946

THE COMMUNIST AND NATIONALIST PARTIES WERE FIGHTING A CIVIL WAR.
The years of mistrust between both sides prevented efforts to form a coalition government.

1947-1949

THE CIVIL WAR GAINED STRENGTH.
During this time, a communist victory seemed more likely.

AUGUST 1949

THE "CHINA WHITE PAPER" WAS PUBLISHED BY THE TRUMAN ADMINISTRATION.
It explained the U.S. policy towards China that only Chinese forces could determine the outcome of the war.

OCTOBER 1, 1949

MAO ZEDONG DECLARED THE CREATION OF THE PRC.
The PRC stood for the People's Republic of China. This ended the war, and the Communist Party won.
