Plot
The city of Ember is an underground city that depends on electricity because it's their only source of light .
There are shortages of food and the generator is broken and is causing blackouts.The Mayor claims that he has a solution for the electricity that keeps on going off/on since it's their only source of light but is it his or Ember's?

The builders of the city of Ember made a box that would last for 220 years, and then open. The box had a message that would help them escape Ember. Doon, and Lina, with the help of Poppy, try to solve the mystery behind the city of Ember

Setting
The City of Ember and everything in it are very old. It's underground and the sky is always dark. The lights cast a yellow glow.It also very dark and gloomy.

MAIN CHARACTERS

• Lina Mayfleet(messenger, and is related to one of the former mayors)
• Doon Harrow(serious,inquirer,pipe-worker,)
• Poppy(Lina's younger sister)
• Poppy (finds the box the builders left behind with the instructions to escape Ember)

• Lizzie Bisco(Lina's friend, works at a supply depot, and talks a lot)
• Mayor Cole (mayor,villain, and fat)
• Looper:(works in the storerooms, and smuggles food for the mayor)

Theme
The author wants the reader to be an inquirer and a risk-taker. She also wants us to be a thinker and ask questions about what is going on.

My favorite part is when Looper discovers that the storerooms marked empty were filled with food. It is my favorite part because it is the part where everything makes sense and you begin to piece the story it altogether.

Recommendation
I would recommend this book because it makes you wonder what is going to happen next and it hooks you into the book. If you like science fiction or the giver you will definitely enjoy this book.
