  • The civil war happened in 1861 to 1865 between the Union states and eleven southern states "the Confederate States of America".

Causes of Secession

  • The main cause is that the Republican Party was determined to prevent the spread of slavery, which that made many southern leaders upset and wanted to disunion and become a separate country.

  • The war produced at least 1,030,000 casualties (3 percent of the population), including about 620,000 soldier deaths—two-thirds by disease, and 50,000 civilians.
