  • First Major battle of the Civil War.
  • Union almost captured Richmond.

  • Confederates surprise attack Union forces.
  • Union victory gave TN to the Union

  • Major battle that took place on Union soil.
  • Union victory gave Lincoln the courage to announce the Emancipation Proclamation.

  • Spotsyivania County VA, April 30 - May 6 1863
  • Battle began because the Union crossed the Rappahannock River.
  • Attempt by the Union to seize Richmond.

  • Born June 3, 1808
  • President of the Confederate states
  • Military leader
  • Convicted of treason but never tried

  • Executive order by President Lincoln to end slavery
  • Confederate states did not follow this law
  • This made a war goal for the Union

  • Jackson bravery and success inspired many soldiers.
