Why did the North win?

  • This will be our focus question for the next several days
  • Your task is to come up with your own answer
  • No single correct answer (a number of factors contributed to the North's victory)
  • Today's Objective: How Union/Confederate armies gained troops and support

  • Hobby = recreate a particular battle of the Civil War down to the most inane and stupid detail
  • Spend a both a money, waste a lot of time to live and train like a Civil War soldier

Southern Baptist Choirs

  • SBC = largest Protestant church in US (16 million members)
  • African American Baptist churches date back to 1774
  • Post Civil War - African Americans wanted to separate from white churches, and formed their own unique style of worship
  • Compared their struggle out of slavery with Moses and the Israelites (Exodus)
  • Choirs are famous all over the world

  • Some tribes fought for the Union, some for the Confederacy, and some were neutral
  • Some northern tribes fought the Union (Dakota War of 1862)

  • And 13th Amendment

The Emancipation Proclamation

  • Abe issues in Sept 1862 (after Antietam); took effect January 1, 1863
  • Decided to emancipate enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy
  • Four border states loyal to the Union would NOT have their slaves freed
  • Lincoln wrote it as a war measure to cripple the Confederacy

Impact

  • No slaves in Confederacy actually got their freedom when document was signed
  • Changed the purpose of the war = crusade against slavery
  • Prevented foreign nations (France and England) from supporting Confederacy
  • Allowed African Americans to fight for their freedom
  • E.P. led to total abolition of slavery
