Polis
- the early Greek city-state, consisting of a city or town and its surrouding
Tyrant: ruler who seizes power by force and not subject to the law
Democracy: "the rule of the many", government by the people, either directly or through their elected representatives
Oligarchy: "the rule of the few", a form of government in which a small group of people exercises control
Direct Democracy: a form of government in which all laws are created by the general vote in society
Sparta: a city-state in ancient Greece
Athens: largest city in Greece
