The Cold War was after WWII where Russia and the US were having an arms/technology race. Its originated when Russian launched a satalite called sputnik into space. The US realized they were behind in technology so they did what was needed to keep up.
The Cold War was the result of the rising tensions between the United States and Russia because they could not agree on how to rebuild Germany after WWII.
It is called the Cold War because a military battle never came to fruition, so the "heat" of gunfire never came into play. Instead, the war was fought with "Cold" political maneuvering and other measures.

The Kitchen Debate was basically about capitalism vs communism. Nixon taunted Kruschev with America's abundance of consumer goods which the Soviet Union lacked.In those days Americans bragged about the superiority of their kitchens while the Soviets bragged about the superiority of their rockets.
