BEGINNING

  • Started after World War1
  • Alliance between Soviet Union and U.S collapsed
  • Both emerged as superpowers
  • Both took over Wrecked Europe, disagreed on economic and government systems
  • Called the Cold War because there was never a direct clash of arms

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS

  • Soviet economic system was communism
  • U.S economic system was capitalist
  • Capitalism has free market and private ownership
  • Communism, government is highly in control of the economy, no free market or privately owned businesses
  • Capitalism included liberalism and peoples rights

U.S FOREIGN POLICY

  • Soviet response evolved into two counter strategies
  • 1st was support for wars of liberation or colonial revolution
  • 2nd was attainment of military parity with United States and Allies

  • The kitchen debate illustrated the rift between U.S and Soviet Union
  • Showed conflict between communist and capitalist policy
  • Started struggle between economic and social systems
  • Illustrated how conflict had grown since 1945
