  • A political theory advocating state ownership of industry

COMMUNISM

  • The government owns all property and dominates all aspects of life in a country

REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY

  • government in which citizens elect representatives to make decisions about the laws for all

THR COLD WAR

  • 1945-1991/ a conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union/ the nations never directly confronted each other

BIG THREE

  • Soviet Union - Stalin, United Kingdom - Churchill, United States - Roosevelt

UNITED NATIONS

  • organization formed after WWII to promote international peace, security, and cooperation

EAST GERMANY

  • Germany was divided into two countries, this part was COMMUNIST

WEST GERMANY

  • British, American and French zone of Germany and was DEMOCRATIC

YALTA CONFERENCE

  • Meeting with US president FDR, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and and Soviet Leader Stalin

BERLIN BLOCKADE

  • blockade was a Soviet attempt to starve out the allies in Berlin in order to gain supremacy

BERLIN AIRLIFT

  • airlift in 1948 that supplied food and fuel to citizens of west Berlin when the Russians

NATO

  • U.S., Great Britain, France, and other nations/ NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION

WARSAW PACT

  • alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations

CONTAINMENT

  • resisting further expansion of communism around the world

TRUMAN DOCTRINE

  • economic/ military aid to countries/ used to prevent the spread of communism

MARSHALL PLAN

  • reconstruction funds/ helped prevent the spread of communism

  • rapid economic recovery and development after World War II

OCCUPATION ZONE

  • Germany that had been given to other nations

  • system in which the power of the government is limited

  • government in which leaders rule without any restrictions
