WHY AND WHAT THE COLONY WAS FOUNDED FOR

  • Lord Baltimore was motivated by
  • Profit from tobacco
  • To create a place for Roman Catholics who were being persecuted by Protestant England
  • Maryland was a proprietorship= proprietor had executive authority
  • Religious Freedom

CHARACTERISTICS OF MARYLAND'S GEOGRAPHY

  • The Blue Ridge Mountains
  • Pennsylvania Hills
  • Indented shores of Chesapeake Bay
  • Potomac River, Falls of Potomac
  • Dimension stone and coal were mined and dimension stone made up most of the buildings in colonial time

  • People chopped down trees to make houses and kindling
  • People mined for coal and dimension stones
  • Harbors cities and houses were built

  • Corn,tobacco,grains,fruit,vegetables
  • Fish,iron,lumber,bricks, beaver
  • Ships, clay

TRADE WITH NATIVE AMERICANS

  • They were expert trappers that sold fur for house hold items
  • The fur was then sold to Europeans which became very profitable for Maryland's economy
  • Native Americans taught colonists how to hunt and fish
  • They helped the colonist establish a strong economy with these skills
  • Colonists were also taught how to grow tobacco

  • Lord Baltimore the founder of Maryland (George Calvert) ruled
  • Until he passed in 1632 and handed the grant of territory to his son
  • His brother Leonard Calvert was then appointed governor in 1633

  • Was intended for Roman Catholics
  • escaping persecution from Protestant England

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

  • Maryland was originally founded as a refuge from religious persecution
  • Religious freedom was accepted
  • Main Religions Roman Catholic, and Protestant

NATIVE AMERICANS INTERACTIONS WITH THE COLONY

  • The native Americans accepted the colonists and taught them to hunt fish and grow crops
  • They traded and bartered and taught them to trap
  • They used these furs to sell to the Europeans
  • The tobacco growing and furs developed this colonies wealth

ROLE IN REVOLUTION

  • Baltimore served as a temporary capital of the colonies when
  • the second continental congress met there in December of 1766
  • Maryland's state house is where the Treaty of Paris was signed ending the war and where George Washington stepped down from chief commander
  • Not any major battles were fought in Maryland

FUN FACTS OF MARYLAND

  • Tobacco was considered currency at one time
  • The colonies nickname was "The Act of Tolleration"
