PROBLEMS LEADING UP TO THE COMPROMISE

  • California had enough people to be a state
  • This would upset the balance between slave and free states
  • Territory was gained in the Mexican-American War
  • Already 15 free states and 15 slave states

NORTHERN BENEFITS OF COMPROMISE

  • California was added as a free state
  • Slave trade was prohibited in Washignton D.C.
  • Texas lost boundary dispute with New Mexico

SOUTHERN BENEFITS OF COMPROMISE

  • No slave restrictions in Utah or New Mexico territories
  • Slave holding was permitted in Washington D.C.
  • Texas received 10 million dollars
  • The Fugitive Slave Law was passed
  • This helped slave owners capture runaway slaves

  • Delayed the Civil War
  • Helped keep the balance between North and South
  • Compromise was mostly popular
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act had to be passed in 1854
  • Missouri Compromise had to be repealed
