WHY WAS THE COMPROMISE NECESSARY

  • California was originally divided between a free and slave state
  • The compromise made California a free state

GAINS BY THE NORTH

  • California is a free state
  • Slave trade is prohibited in Washington DC
  • Texas loses boundary dispute with New Mexico

GAINS FOR THE SOUTH

  • No slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico territories
  • Slaveholding is permitted in Washington DC
  • Texas gets $10 million
  • Fugitive Slave Law

LONG TERM EFFECTS OF THE COMPROMISE

  • The balance of the senate goes to the north
  • The inbalance of the senate started the Civil War
