PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Compromise of 1850 was necessary because there were various unresolved issues that were not covered in previous compromises and this compromise settled issues such as California, Texas, Mexico, and Utah, and multiple slavery related issues to avoid the inevitable civil war for a few more years.
The Compromise of 1850 granted the admission of California as a free state, prohibited slave trade in D.C., and Texas lost boundary disputes with New Mexico. (All benefitted the north)
It also gave the south zero slavery restrictions in Utah and New Mexico, permitted slave holding in D.C., granted Texas $10 million, and created the Fugitive Slave Law. (all benefitted the south)
One predominant long term effect of the Compromise of 1850 is the division economically, politically, and morally between the northern and southern states avoiding war for a decade, but eventually resulting in the Civil War.
