THE GREAT COMPROMISE

COMPROMISE:

AN AGREEMENT REACHED BY ADJUSTMENT OF CONFLICTING OR OPPOSING CLAIMS

The Great Compromise saved the Constitutional Convention, and, probably, the Union. Authored by Connecticut delegate Roger Sherman, it called for proportional representation in the House, and one representative per state in the Senate. This pleased states with larger populations.

THE 3/5 COMPROMISE

Southerners demanded that Blacks be counted with whites. The compromise clearly reflected the strength of the pro-slavery forces at the convention. The “Three-fifths Compromise” allowed a state to count three fifths of each Black person in determining political representation in the House.

These compromises are just some of the few things that protect our freedom.
