what is a pearl?

  • a hard, lustrous spherical mass, typically white or bluish-gray, formed within the shell of a pearl oyster or other bivalve mollusk and highly prized as a gem.

How is a pearl made naturally?
Layer upon layer of nacre, also known as mother-of-pearl, coat the grain of sand (irritant) until the iridescent gem is formed

How is a cultured pearl made?
Cultured pearls are made the same way.Only a "pearl farmer" embeds the grain of sand.

The only difference is the sand is embed on purpose. Other than that they are the same

Akoya, or saltwater pearls come from oysters, but freshwater pearls usually come from mussels, although all mollusks can make pearls
